This was the wine that won The Ontario versus Bordeaux blind challenge in 2007 (Canada’s Bottle Shock equal), that put Ontario’s Cabernet Merlots versus classed growth Bordeaux. Southbrook vanquished among others Chateaux Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Margaux valued at $249. Still youthful, cherry and spice dominate the nose and palate. A very special wine! 750mL; SOLD OUT.

The Discovery
by Gwendolyn MacEwen

do not imagine that the exploration
ends, that she has yielded all her mystery
or that the map you hold
cancels further discovery

I tell you her uncovering takes years,
takes centuries, and when you find her naked
look again,
admit there is something else you cannot name,
a veil, a coating just above the flesh
which you cannot remove by your mere wish

when you see the land naked, look again
(burn your maps, that is not what I mean),
I mean the moment when it seems most plain
is the moment when you must begin again

Born in Toronto in 1941, Gwendolyn MacEwen was first published at the age of 17 while attending high school. Before her untimely death in 1987, MacEwen amassed a brilliant body of work, including twelve books of poetry, two novels, two collections of short fiction and a travel book. She also won two Governor General Awards for poetry (one posthumously). MacEwen’s poetry continues to be in demand and the story of the woman behind the poetry continues to intrigue.  Exile Editions has published three volumes of MacEwen’s work, the first two in the early 1990s and the most recent in 2007. Two plays about her life have appeared on the Toronto stage and she is the subject of an award-winning biography.
