2002 Cabernet Merlot

May 11, 2011

2002 Triomphe Cabernet Merlot VQA

$21.95 / 750ml (Ontario Price Shown)

Wine Lovers' Notes:

In the Glass

The 2002 Cabernet Merlot expresses dried red cherries, saddle leather and intoxicating cedar aromas on the nose. The palate is just as haunting as the nose; where an evolution of dried cherry turns into provoking anise spice, red currant and cigar box. There is wonderful oak integration balanced with evolved fruit and acidity.

Lost & Found Rating: Treasure - "...for dinner I had brought a special bottle that I was looking forward to tasting, and it was this Southbrook number that was 9 years old. After the robustness of the Aussies this was a subtle experiment and most stayed with the knock-over-your-head with flavour of the Down Under Wines, which left more for me, and I could not be more thankful. The wine is at its peak... still holding on to fruit like cassis and sour cherry with vanilla wood backing. The palate is having a heyday with a touch of green pepper (so slight that it disappears with time - after 3 or 4 sips) giving way to a brilliant smoothness that is flavoured with cassis and vanilla-wooden notes. Deliciously amazing, smooth and easy sipping. If you have a bottle or two I suggest bringing some out, firing up the grill and matching it up with something medium-rare... I hope you too will be stunned".
- Michael Pinkus, Ontario Wine Review: Lost & Found

"This shows a very sensuous, maturing nose where fresh currant fruit, herbs, tobacco, leather and chocolate are all in perfect synch. It's medium weight, smooth and quite fine... Tannins have almost melted away. Excellent length".
- David Lawrason, WineryToHome.com

In your Life

The tannins are well integrated and the acidity cleanses the palate with each new sip. Serve with braised red meat, like lamb or lean game meats such as venison.
